Slide 1:BSPC meeting15th of March 2021THE ROAD TO SUSTAINABLE AND ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY FISHING CASE STUDY OF BRIMSlide 2:ABOUT BRIMBrim is one of Iceland’s largest seafood companies that focuses on both fishing and processing groundfish and pelagic fish.Brim was founded in November 1985 with a merger of Bæjarútgerð Reykjavíkur (Reykjavík Municipal Fisheries Company founded in 1947) and privately owned Ísbjörninn (founded in 1944).The company produces high-quality products from the fresh wild fish caught in Icelandic waters.Respect for the environment and the marine ecosystem is the basis for all activities at Brim, and every effort is made to respect the resource and operate responsible fisheries, for the benefit of future generations.2Slide 3:ICELANDIC JURISTRICTION3Development4 miles in 195212 miles in 195850 miles in 1972200 miles in 1975Iceland, including territorial waters, is 88% sea and 12% land. The expansion of the fishing jurisdiction resulted in an increase in the number of Icelandic fishing fleets.Today, there are over 1500 boats and ships, (down by 400 since the years 2000) catching about 1 million tons of fish every year (Statistics Iceland).Fish is one of Iceland’s main export product, second after raw aluminum.Slide 4:FISHERIES MANAGEMENT SYSTEMSIn 1983, developments in the fishing industry led to systems that pertain to Iceland’s total allowable catch (TAC), which were established by legislation that same year (nr. 68/1983).While the TAC defines the overall catch quantity for each stock over one year the catch quotas are primarily distributed through the fixed share of the TAC the individual operators have (the Individual Transferable Quotas, ITQ).The decision on the annual TAC for each stock is by law anchored in the formal advice presented by the Marine and Freshwater Research Institute in June each year.4Slide 5:AVERAGE AGE OF THE FLEET5YEARSTotalDeckedUndeckedTrawlersSlide 6:OIL USE6`000 tonnsFishingFishmeal plantsSlide 7:OIL USE BY VEHICLES7`000 tonnsDomesticfishing vesselsOthervesselsForeignfishing vesselsCarsAirplanesSlide 8:SUSTAINABILITY8The fisheries management system was the foundation for sustainable fishing.Fish stocks are in better shape since the adoption of the current fishing management system. It is easier to plan fishing operations, catches per day spent at sea have increased significantly and fishing trips are shorter.Sustainable fishing has encouraged innovation, as more attention has been paid to the better utilisation of the catch and solutions sought to create greater value and reduce costs. It is important for Brim, as well as for the Icelandic fisheries sector in general and the nation, that the condition of the fish stocks remain healthy and that information on catches and conduct regarding the marine ecosystem is reliable, traceable and transparent.Slide 9:OVERVIEW OF BRIM‘S EFFORTS9Slide 10:THE ENVIRONMENT10Environmental issues pose one of the greatest challenges to the fisheries sector.Brim strives to promote responsibility in all its operations in the use of marine resources and the role it plays in the community.First sustainability report was published in 2018 for the year 2017.It was clear that it would take time to map out all the aspects of our operations. No concrete guidelines and important to learn along the way.Slide 11:THE ENVIRONMENT - CLEANER VALUE CHAIN IN FISHERIES11Brim’s environmental efforts are under the name “Cleaner Value Chain in Fisheries”.The program includes the following main aspects:Ensuring knowledge development of all the aspects of environmental impact from the operation of the company throughout the value chain (from fishing to the market).Systematically reducing the negative environmental impact of the operation of the company.Reducing the formation of waste and ensuring better sorting of waste.Ensuring quantification and goal setting in environmental matters.Improving operations and responsibility with respect to the environment.Supporting Iceland’s national goals as regards climate issues.Slide 12:KEY PROJECT – DATA COLLECTED SYSTEMATICALLYWe have steadily been working on mapping the environmental effects. In the past years we have developed a dashboard which digitally shows all the main aspects of the environmental issues. In order to ensure the reliability and data frequency of the environmental results, environmental information is collected automatically from the main operations and suppliers of the company. Thus, it is possible to monitor the benefits of individual actions in environmental issues.12Slide 13:SCREENSHOT - MONITORING SPEED AND OIL USE13Slide 14:KEYS FOR SUCCESSProjects aimed at minimizing the impact on the environment and at the same time have a good operational impact.Renewal of the fleetInnovations on boardUse of renewable energy while at harborOur plans, and not least the investments, must aim to be carbon-neutral.This is a journey; it is always possible to find improvement projects. This is a decision!14Slide 15:ENVIRONMENTAL COMPANY OF THE YEAR IN 201915Slide 16:Thank you!greta@brim.is
